Breast Reduction (Reduction Mammaplasty)
Breast reduction surgery is meant for women with very large, pendulous breasts. Many women have medical issues caused by the excessive weight of their chest. Breast reduction is designed to decrease the size of the breast and alleviate some medical issues related to breast weight. Breast reduction surgery or mammaplasty, surgically removes fat, glandular tissue and skin, making the breast smaller, lighter and firmer. In addition, the surgery can reduce the size of the areola to create a breast that looks natural.
The goal of breast reduction surgery is typically for physical relief rather than a change in the breast's appearance. Most patients suffer physically from their breasts and are restricted in their activities. Typically a breast reduction surgery isn't performed until the breasts are fully developed. In some cases, if large breasts are causing serious physical discomfort, the surgery can be done earlier. This surgery is not recommended for women who plan to breastfeed.
